Although the works are written in Japanese, many of them contain images that anyone can understand. For example, if you search this collection using the search term "earthquake," you will find a fascinating collection of materials depicting earthquakes that have occurred over the past few centuries and their effects.

One cartoon , thought to have been made shortly after the Ansei Edo earthquake of 1855 (Ansei 2) , shows prostitutes from Yoshiwara and the townspeople who suffered great damage in the earthquake punishing a giant catfish, which was believed to be the cause of the earthquake. The men in the upper left are trying to intervene, but they are construction workers whose business has boomed with the reconstruction efforts after the earthquake.

More frightening depictions of earthquake damage are special database found in ukiyo-e prints depicting the fires in Edo , which also occurred after the Ansei Edo earthquake, and the collapse of houses in the Nobi earthquake of 1891 (Meiji 24) . natural disasters have played in Japanese life.

Other notable resources include the high-resolution images of the Kamei Collection's Piranesi Prints : Opere di Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Francesco Piranesi e d'altri (1835-1839, published by Firmin & Didot Brothers, Paris).

The Internet Archive hopes that through its partnership with the University of Tokyo Library and the public release of this collection, Japanese history and culture will become more accessible to the world, and that it will encourage a new generation of researchers to use materials and conduct academic research.
