To better understand ChatGPT's limitations, we asked some native Portuguese translators about their opinions on the content generated on the platform. This is the prompt we used on ChatGPT: "Can you write a 5-sentence paragraph in Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese that talks about friendship? Then, give an English translation of it."
Based on the comments that we received about the European and Brazilian Portuguese translations, they stated that although both translations were good, they noticed that the English translated part: “What matters most is not the amount, but the quality of the time spent together.” They explained that Portuguese readers would find it a bit difficult to understand, especially concerning European Portuguese.
“Basically, the literal translation of the sentence doesn’t quite work kuwait mobile database and would stand out to a Portuguese reader. While they may still decipher the meaning, a creative alteration of the sentence makes it more natural and better understood” Felipe G. explained.
The distinctions between Brazilian and European Portuguese pose significant challenges for AI models like ChatGPT. When an AI model is primarily trained on one variant, such as Brazilian Portuguese, it may struggle to interpret or generate content in the other variant accurately. This can result in misinterpretations, awkward phrasing, or misunderstandings, ultimately affecting the quality of user interactions.
