Family allowance was established by Law No. 4,266, of October 3, 1963, aiming to comply with the provisions of article 157, No. I, final part, of the Federal Constitution.
Its purpose is to ensure that workers covered by it receive financial quotas to help them support and educate their children, subject to the established conditions and limits.

What is family allowance?
Family allowance is an amount paid to employees, including domestic and casual workers, based on the number of children. The employee must request the benefit directly from the employer, and casual workers make the request to the union or labor management body to which they are affiliated.
Who is entitled to receive family allowance?
To be entitled to the benefit, it is necessary to meet some requirements, let's see:
Working with a signed employment contract or being a casual worker, which is the category of workers who are required to provide services through a union or labor management body.
Earn up to R$1,819.26 per month. This amount is valid in 2024. The amount is updated every year by the government and defined by Ministerial Ordinance.
Have a child under 14 years of age, or a child with a disability of any age, provided that they have undergone an INSS assessment.
Anyone who has more than one source of income needs to add up the amounts to check whether they are entitled to family allowance.
What documentation is required to apply for family allowance?
Now that you know who is entitled to receive it, see the documentation required to apply for the benefit:
Birth certificate or equivalent document of children: To prove the existence of dependents, it is necessary to present the birth certificate or some official document that attests to the kinship relationship.
Proof of school enrollment: Some companies may require proof of enrollment of children in regularly recognized educational institutions, as a way of ensuring that they are at the school age required for the benefit to be granted.
The company requests the children's CPF, as it is a form of identification and proof of the existence of dependents.
Pay stub or proof of income: To prove the employee's income, many companies require the presentation of a pay stub or some document that certifies the amount received monthly.
Work card: Presentation of a work card is common, as it is one of the documents that prove the employment relationship and the contribution to Social Security.
The company may request an up-to-date proof of residence, such as a water, electricity or telephone bill.
It is important to clarify that the application for family allowance must be made through the INSS, through the website or Meu INSS app. This is only in cases where the worker is receiving a benefit for temporary incapacity (sickness benefit), retirement due to permanent incapacity (disability retirement) or rural retirement due to old age.
