The CIO must select the appropriate mechanisms and ensure their operation. It is also important for him to monitor the company's capabilities, control the development of IT systems and establish data exchange. The CDTO's priority is the strategic goals of implementing a particular technology, hence his task is to define and describe in detail, with the help of top managers, how the company will begin to operate in the information sphere and provide digital services.
Due to the increasing importance of the CDTO position, obtaining it often gives the employee the opportunity to join the board of directors. At the same time, his influence on the distribution of the company's budget increases, since a significant share of the funds allocated to him is invested in risk reduction and business development.
The CDTO must have a diverse background
It happens that a company dentist database that needs a digital director spends a lot of time searching for a candidate because he or she is required to have diverse experience in conducting sales on the Internet, social networks, electronic platforms, etc. In addition, the CDTO must understand how digital transformation is carried out, how business systems work using advanced technologies, and also have practical experience in digital transformation.

In foreign countries, CDTO is usually singled out as a separate position by large companies with more than 10 thousand employees. Medium and small firms prefer to assign the task of developing digital technologies to key managers. The recruitment agency Harvey Nash claims that in 2018, the director of digital technologies received an average of about $ 175,303 per year. If converted at the average exchange rate, the monthly salary was 916 thousand rubles.
Although there is a trend towards separating the responsibilities of the CDTO and CIO, the maturity of the business still matters, so the CDO can play different roles – from mentoring during the initial digital transformation plans to leading the creation of information systems during the actual reform of business processes. Sometimes the CDTO and CIO functions are so close that they are better combined into one position, but this is preferable for smaller companies.
In general, the difference between CIO and CDTO can be described as follows. The former performs routine tasks and ensures the continuous functioning of the company's information systems, i.e. the principle applies - if everything works, do not change anything. And the CDTO determines the company's strategy and manages transformations, he must be ready to respond to changing circumstances and accordingly improve the applied technologies. It can be said that the key to stability here is constant change. However, it is not recommended to develop an IT strategy independently of operational activities. Otherwise, the concepts proposed by the CDTO may have nothing to do with reality, and then their implementation will be simply impossible.
