In order to approve the merger of the two telephony giants Sprint and T-Mobile , the FCC (the US government agency that regulates the telecommunications sector) required the authorization for sale of the Boost Mobile brand (a low-cost prepaid cell phone operator owned by Sprint). And the company that appears to be very interested in buying the operator is Amazon .
According to Reuters, Amazon would be willing to pay the US$3 billion that would be necessary to acquire Boost Mobile, which would also place the retail giant in the mobile phone market.
Since Boost is an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator), it does not have its own network infrastructure, and works only as a reseller of Sprint's own network. Therefore, even if Amazon buys the company, it will still be dependent on the result of the merger between T-Mobile and Sprint to continue operating. The advantage is that it would already enter the greece number dataset with a good user base (there are currently between 7 and 8 million Boost users in the US) and a license to operate and resell within the network of the company that will emerge from the merger for six years without the need to negotiate any type of contract to provide service during this period. However, according to Reuters, Amazon would be interested in not only buying Boost and continuing to operate as a virtual operator, but also buying any antennas that Sprint or T-Mobile are interested in selling, and starting to develop its own telephony structure.
This is not the first time that Amazon has shown interest in entering the mobile telephony market. The company already has its own operating system based on Android (Fire OS) and, a few years ago, it tried to launch its own smartphone (the Amazon Fire Phone) but without much success, and lately it has been selling smartphones that already come with Amazon apps installed by default.
It's easy to see why Amazon would be interested in this market, after all it's one of the largest in the world and one of the few in which Amazon doesn't participate, so it wouldn't be hard to imagine the company investing a lot of money to acquire more than just one carrier, but also an already established user base to start offering its services.
