This was a moment. Putting an image in negative and turning it into an “evil” character.

Here we show again the temporality of memes and how, in this case, Taco Bell, famous for their numerous memes on social networks, knew how to take advantage of the virality of this trend (through newsjacking) and reproduce a meme for themselves.

The same thing happens with Netflix. They used their own content from their current series in October 2021. They did not hesitate to use images from The Squid Game to portray a moment in which all social networks had fallen, all except Twitter.

Political campaigns
It may be tempting, but it is not worth giving in to it because… it goes wrong! Political issues that will have an effect on the population should not be joked about.

Being too funny, in this case, can lead to an image crisis .

Are memes relevant, then, to a brand strategy?
If your goal is to create a trend or reflect a cultural aspect that defines your target, then yes, you can use them, without overdoing it. Take advantage of the fact that they are an inexpensive resource, very easy to share, that add relevance to your brand and, in addition, unite by creating a sense of community.

If you understand what memes are, you know that they can help you easily connect with your audience and make your message go viral … but they can also act as a double-edged sword and harm your brand.

My advice is that it's better to use them as a social listening tool to understand trends than to try to look like Mr. Burns disguised as a teenager.

Let's look at some interesting examples of memes on the most common social networks (that you may already know) to delve deeper into their meaning.

Twitter
Perhaps this is where they are most abundant and most used, along with Facebook (Meta).

meme-van-gogh-earIf January 20th comes around in Spain, your Twitter account ceo email lists wusical culture and the song by the well-known Donostia group, La Oreja de Van Gogh.

meme-unread-bookPopular culture agrees that the need to buy new books in this society of oversaturated cultural consumption is already something we embrace with humor . Don't let FOMO keep you from reading Sally Rooney's latest novel, right?

classic-memeA classic in the history of memes. This one in particular is related to this type of meme that works on its own or that can be used as templates to add text to give it more context. You will see some examples later in the article.

meme-paquita-salas-evidentlyAudiovisual references, such as the Netflix series Paquita Salas , by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, have become memes in their own right . This capture of the character Magüi, played by Belén Cuesta, is an example of a clip-meme . By including the subtitle text, this still from the series works as an image loaded with meaning and can be used to complete a message on social networks.
