Now, the platform will redouble its efforts to become profitable.
At Snapchat's Investor Day on February 16, when the social network addressed its investors, it revealed it had reached 750 million monthly active users. While the platform is approaching the iconic billion mark, it remains far behind its main competitors.
Change of strategy
2022 has been a difficult year for the entire tech industry, and Snapchat in particular. The company posted a significant loss of $1.4 billion during the year. Struggling to become profitable, it shifted its strategy with three priorities in mind: increasing its user base and encouraging them to spend more time on Snapchat, boosting revenue growth, and investing in augmented reality technology, Bloomberg reports .
These efforts seem to be paying off. By reaching 750 million users, Snapchat has seen a 25% increase in ten months . " This has been achieved thanks to the changes we've made to our business and despite the slowdown in our revenue growth ," says Evan Spiegel, the company's CEO. It's worth noting that the increase in users is particularly noticeable in emerging markets like India ; Snapchat is now counting on these territories to reach a billion users in the coming years.
While Snapchat outperformed Pinterest, it was largely surpassed by Facebook and Instagram, which had 3 billion and 2 billion monthly users respectively. TikTok, with which it competes for younger users, has over 1 billion.
Snapchat is more confident for 2023
Still, Spiegel expressed enthusiasm for the oman mobile database popularity of Snapchat+'s subscription system , which has 2.5 million subscribers and is on track to generate $100 million in annual revenue just six months after its launch. Similarly, the platform's investments in augmented reality are starting to pay off: in 2022, more than 250 million users used Snapchat's AR shopping lenses .
Spotlight, launched to compete directly with TikTok, attracts only 300 million of Snapchat's 750 million monthly users, but the platform claims that number is steadily growing. In the fourth quarter of 2022, total time spent on Spotlight more than doubled compared to the same period last year .
The social network also indicated that the decline in digital marketing spending that hit the sector last year is stabilizing. Snapchat will be offering new advertising offerings this year, particularly those based on augmented reality. It therefore hopes to see its revenues rebound after being heavily impacted by Apple's App Tracking Transparency .
