Fighting the end of the world with "Borsalino"

When the "war" broke out in Paris on Friday, Swiss television acted appropriately. It broadcast the French gangster comedy "Borsalino" with the national heroes Belmondo and Delon. It couldn't be more French.

Admittedly, that may sound cynical in light of the horrific events in Paris. But the information performance of individual media can be measured on days like these. Good old CNN did an excellent job, as did many other channels with their special programs. Not to mention the private Internet services, which perform at their best myanmar rcs data during events like these. But "Borsalino"? Hello SRF!

Swiss television should be judged by its public service performance, preached the SRG bosses before the memorable Billag vote this spring. We did that on Friday evening - and were confused. But that's a tradition: when Swiss television slept through the failed assassination attempt on the then US President Ronald Reagan 35 years ago, it was a topic of conversation for days.

As Friday showed, television is especially justified when it is present live at major events - no matter how tragic they are - and not just the following day and week.

When the private broadcaster Sat.1 broadcast the Miss Switzerland election from Basel last Saturday, an SRF executive tweeted that it was now clear that such broadcasts in Switzerland were not actually possible without license fee money. That is downright condescending. But what this Friday proved is that good and, above all, fast information is possible even without license fee channels.
