The French online press is generally struggling to get readers to pay. What is stopping strong media brands from taking off, apart from the gloomy economic context, the still strong influence of the free culture and a plethora of competition for content? Here are some misconceptions that partly explain the difficulties some publishers have in winning over more paying readers.
Mind took stock on February 25, 2020 on the number of pure digital subscribers of the main players in the French press. The figures show a nice progression of the four leaders L'Equipe, Le Monde, Mediapart and Le Figaro. And a huge gap with the following, including for powerful and well-known media brands on the web ( Le Parisien, Libération, L'Express ). A difficulty that contrasts with the relative success of Brief.me which, with a small team, managed to convince 8,500 subscribers in a few years.
