Hot smoking smokehouse from a gas cylinder

Post by zihadhosenjm40 »

I was going to put casters on the smoker to make it easier to move around, but instead I made a platform with casters to place the smoker on. Putting casters directly on the smoker would make it too unstable since it is so narrow and tall. The platform makes it more stable and allows me to move it around or leave it in one place if I want.

Step 9: Cooking
For my first cook I made pork ribs. The smoker performed like a car owner data and I had plenty of airflow to keep the fire burning nice and clean. I hope you enjoyed this build.

For a few years I wanted a large hot smoker. The high prices put me off, but eventually I decided that the only way I was going to afford it was to make my own. I decided to make mine out of a couple of old gas cylinders.
Neither I nor my friends who helped me are professional welders, but in a short amount of time we managed to come up with something pretty solid.

Step 1: Removing the valve
By far the hardest part of building a smoker is getting the valve out of the gas cylinder. I made sure all the gas was gone before attempting to remove the valve and left the valve open for a couple of days. You might be lucky and be able to do it with a wrench, it didn't work for me and ended up rounding off the valve nut.

Step 2: Make sure there is no gas left in the cylinder
Once you have removed the valve, fill the cylinder with water to force out any remaining gas. To make sure all the gas is forced out and there are no bubbles left, I emptied and refilled the tank. Since a tank filled with water is very heavy, I siphoned the water between fills to make life easier.
